Opportunity: The Shell and Institute of Physics Award for the Very Early Career Woman Physicist of the Year, cd 26 February 2010

The Women in Physics Group annually invite applications from women at the start of their careers in physics who have made a substantial contribution to the subject and may also have undertaken activities to support and encourage others in the field. The prize is awarded annually to a woman who is within three years of completing her undergraduate degree in physics and who is either working as a physicist or is engaged in postgraduate study.

The winner will receive £1,000 donated by Shell and an award certificate at a major Institute of Physics Women in Physics event. As well as providing recognition of the winner's work through the prize money, the award will also provide valuable networking opportunities. Applicants therefore must be working in the UK or Ireland.

The Very Early Career Woman Physicist of the Year Award seeks to recognise the work done by physicists who are embarking on a career in physics and to promote the career opportunities open to people with physics qualifications.

Opportunity: Expert Group for Women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), c/d 5 January 2009

New members are sought to join an Expert Group for Women in STEM which reports to the Government's Department for Innovation, Universities and skills (DIUS). The Group advises the Government on developments and strategy for women in STEM. The Group advises, participates and initiates activities to achieve a supportive workplace across all STEM employment areas (industry, government, NGOs academia and education).

Applications are welcomed from those in the STEM field and the wider science community with an interest in gender and diversity issues. Membership to the group is unpaid, although reasonable travel expenses for attending meetings will be reimbursed. The closing date for applications is Monday 5 January 2009. Opportunity: Women of outstanding achievement 2009, c/d 19 September 2008

The UKRC’s Women of Outstanding Achievement awards profile outstanding women within science, engineering and technology. There are three categories: 1 - Communication of SET with, and contribution to, society; 2 - SET discovery, innovation and entrepreneurship; 3 - SET leadership and inspiration to others. Six winners will be chosen. All women in science, engineering and technology and the built environment in the UK are eligible for entry. The UKRC is particularly keen for women in industry to be nominated.

Previous winners include Rebecca George of IBM, Ijeoma Uchegbu of the London School of Pharmacy, Julia King formerly of Rolls Royce, and Sima Adhya of QinetiQ. Nominations should be made using the nomination form, with a 600 word nomination statement explaining why the candidate should receive the award, and received by UKRC by 19 September 2008.
